Yummy Butter Cream Frosting

This week, my baby turned five - and as timing would have it - ended up with three cakes. The party cake, the at home on my actual birthday cake, and finally the grandparents are coming cake.  First the recipe - this came from my friend Margie, I think - or maybe my friend Mindy - I know (or at least I think) they both use it. Anyhow, it's delish - here you go.

1/2 cup regular (not the butter kind) shortening
1 stick butter (room temp)
1 tsp. vanilla (or whatever flavor extract you like - we do peppermint a lot)
5-6 tablespoons of milk  (add more or less depending on how thick/stiff you want your frosting)
1 bag of confectionary sugar

Mix all ingredients together - add colors - and decorate!  Yum, yum yummy!!

And here it is modeled  on the three cakes this week.  First, the ISpy kid party cake:

The actual birthday day cake:

(this one is a little lame - but I was running out of ideas and he handed me that lego guy - in the upper corner and asked me to make him) The grandparents are coming cake:

and here is the birthday boy!!!

Let me know if you try this frosting, and send me a photo of the cake you made!!
As always, feel free to copy!

  1. I use a similar recipe for my buttercream. Did you do the Sponge Bob free-hand? That's impressive, and I love the I-Spy cake idea! Very fun!
